Choose channels for the reader and the story
Decide whether a story needs website placement, a newsletter mention, an app alert, a social post, a partner link, or a combination. Channel choice should reflect urgency, audience interest, and the publication’s consent and editorial rules.
Do not send every story through every channel. A focused distribution plan makes each notification more useful and gives editors time to verify the format and link.
Set format and ownership for each channel
Record who writes, reviews, schedules, and measures the channel version. Specify character limits, image requirements, language, link format, approval rules, and the expected publication window.
Keep responsibility clear when a story changes. Decide who updates the newsletter draft, app alert, or social post if a material correction or new fact appears after distribution.
Keep the original article and links accurate
Use stable canonical article URLs and verify that tracking parameters do not create duplicate pages. The site article should contain the authoritative version and the full reporting context.
Check links, preview titles, images, and localized destinations before sending. If a channel points to a stale or wrong edition, correct it quickly and record what changed.
Measure audience value by channel
Track reach and visits alongside engaged reading, return visits, registrations, unsubscribes, and reader feedback. Use comparable time periods and explain how each channel metric is defined.
Review channel performance with editors and audience teams. Use the results to improve timing, formats, and selection—not to maximize notifications regardless of reader value.
