Does free CMS software mean a free website?
Not necessarily. A free CMS may still require hosting, domain services, backups, monitoring, design, extensions, developer time, and support. A free content management system is best evaluated by total cost over the period you expect to use it, including the people who keep it secure and available.
A paid or hosted CMS may bundle some operating responsibilities, but the exact scope differs. Confirm which services and limits apply, who owns each task, and how additional work is priced. “Free” and “paid” describe pricing models; neither alone proves that a solution is affordable or appropriate.
What does open source change?
Open-source CMS software can provide access to code and a community ecosystem. That can support flexibility and inspection, but the publisher still needs a plan for updates, compatibility, access control, extensions, backups, security review, and technical ownership.
The relevant comparison is not only source availability. Assess whether the team can maintain the system, whether the required features are supported, and how the organization will respond when a dependency changes or publishing is interrupted.
What is a managed or hosted CMS?
A managed CMS or hosted content management service typically assigns some infrastructure or maintenance tasks to a provider. The boundary can range from server operations to application updates, backups, monitoring, and support. Read the service description to learn which responsibilities remain with the publisher.
A CMS as a service can reduce some operational work, but publishers should still confirm uptime commitments, service hours, data access, export options, incident communication, and migration assistance. Ask what happens when a requested integration or customization falls outside the included plan.
How should publishers compare cost and control?
Estimate software or subscription fees, hosting, implementation, migration, training, support, extensions, maintenance, security, and likely future changes. Include internal staff time; a low license cost can shift work to the newsroom or engineering team.
Then compare control and risk. Some teams value direct access to code and infrastructure; others prioritize a defined support path and fewer operational duties. Choose the model that fits your resources and document the exit plan before migrating the archive.
