What image qualities does Google recommend?
Google Search Central recommends relevant, high-quality images for Discover and suggests images at least 1200 pixels wide with more than 300,000 total pixels. A 16:9 crop is one common example, but the important subject should remain visible when the image is previewed on a phone.
Use original or properly licensed images that accurately represent the article. Avoid sensational crops or imagery that promises a story the article does not deliver.
How should the CMS store the featured image?
Choose a representative image for the article and keep its caption, credit, alternative text, crop, and source connected to the story. Add the preferred image through supported page metadata and structured data when appropriate.
Preview the image in the page, social card, and mobile layout. Confirm the crop does not hide important context and that the same image is not distorted across templates.
How can publishers keep images fast?
Serve responsive sizes and modern formats where supported, compress without making the image unclear, and avoid loading oversized originals when a smaller version will do. Large image files can become a substantial part of the page weight.
Check image loading on mobile and use a consistent performance review. Keep the high-resolution source in the media library while delivering an optimized version to readers.
Does a good image guarantee Discover traffic?
No. Google says content must be indexed and meet Discover policies to be eligible, and eligibility does not guarantee appearance. Images are one part of the reader preview alongside the story, title, site quality, and Google’s automated systems.
Use Search Console Discover reporting where available to review impressions and clicks over time. Improve image and editorial presentation for readers, not as a promise of a specific ranking or traffic outcome.
