Decide what is translated and what is adapted
Not every article needs a direct translation. Define which stories are shared across editions, who selects them, and when a local editor can reshape the headline, opening, examples, and context for that audience.
Keep the original reporting link and edition relationship visible to staff. A translated version should have an accountable editor and should not imply that local reporting occurred when it did not.
Maintain terminology and metadata
Create language-specific guidance for names, places, transliteration, numerals, dates, and recurring terms. Keep author, language, canonical, and alternate-edition metadata accurate for every page.
Let local editors review headlines and descriptions rather than relying on literal conversion. Search snippets should read naturally and reflect the actual translated or adapted article.
Build a dependable handoff
Track translation status, source version, editor, deadlines, and changes that require re-review. If a material correction occurs in one edition, alert related desks and decide whether another version needs an update.
Measure readership and workflow delays by edition, but do not use raw traffic to erase important community coverage. Regularly review the process with translators and local editors who understand the audience.
