Need help choosing the right news website CMS India platform?

What does Preferred Sources mean for publishers?

Preferred Sources is a reader choice in Google Search. When someone selects a publication, Google may show that source more prominently in supported Search surfaces, including Top Stories and, where available, AI Overviews and AI Mode. Feature availability and presentation can vary by locale and Search experience.

This is a reader relationship feature, not a publisher-controlled ranking switch. A publication cannot make every reader select it, and selection does not guarantee a particular impression, click, placement, or amount of traffic.

Can a publisher become a preferred source directly?

Publishers should not promise that they can enroll every reader or force a preferred-source badge. Google’s publisher guidance says a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible for display in those experiences. Eligibility still does not guarantee that an individual reader will choose the publication or see it in every result.

Check the current Search Console and Google Search documentation for the applicable feature controls. Keep the publication technically eligible for Search, maintain useful reporting, and describe the feature to readers accurately if you invite them to follow your coverage.

What can a newsroom improve?

Make the publication recognizable at every point: consistent site name and logo, clear About and contact pages, visible bylines, author information, a concise editorial purpose, and a correction path. Readers should be able to tell who published a story and what kind of coverage they can expect.

Build recurring coverage around areas where the newsroom has real expertise. Use topic pages and internal links to help readers move from a new report to background and follow-up coverage. A clear identity and sustained reporting give readers a reason to return directly, regardless of which Search features they use.

How should publishers measure the result?

Track available Search Console impressions and clicks alongside analytics measures such as engaged visits, returning readers, newsletter registrations, and qualified enquiries. Look at change over time and by page or section where the tools allow it. Do not treat the presence of a badge or a short-term traffic spike as proof of a lasting audience relationship.

Keep editorial quality as the goal. Clear headlines, accurate reporting, useful images, and transparent corrections support trust across Search, direct visits, newsletters, and other reader journeys.
