Write metadata that matches the story
Use a clear title and description that accurately represent the article and its distinctive value. Avoid repetitive keyword lists, unsupported claims, or text that promises information the page does not provide.
Check the visible headline against the browser title and social preview. They can differ in length, but should describe the same reporting without misleading readers.
Keep article identity consistent
Verify the canonical URL, author, publisher, publication date, meaningful modification date, language, and representative image. Structured data should describe information that readers can see on the page.
Use the appropriate Article or NewsArticle properties supported by the publisher’s implementation. Validate representative pages after template changes and fix warnings that affect important fields; structured data does not guarantee a search feature.
Review the page after publication
Open the live page on mobile and desktop, inspect the canonical and metadata, confirm that images load, and check internal links. Include a workflow for corrections so dates and article information remain accurate.
Review Search Console reports and crawl errors over time. Treat metadata as part of editorial quality and technical maintenance rather than a one-time field-filling exercise.
