Prepare contacts and decision authority
Name the incident lead, technical responders, publisher, legal or privacy contact, hosting provider, and communications owner. Store emergency details somewhere accessible if the primary CMS or email is unavailable.
Define who can take a site offline, revoke accounts, notify affected people, and approve public updates. Keep the plan proportional to the organisation and review it after staffing or infrastructure changes.
Protect backups and credentials
Maintain tested backups with access separated from the production system. Document restoration steps, recovery priorities, and how to verify that restored files and databases are clean and complete.
Use unique accounts, multi-factor authentication where available, least privilege, and an emergency process to rotate exposed credentials. A backup is only useful if staff can restore it within the time the publication can tolerate.
Restore carefully and learn from the event
Preserve relevant logs and evidence, contain the incident, and involve qualified responders. Restore from a trusted point, patch the cause, rotate credentials, and monitor the site before returning critical services to normal.
Communicate accurately with staff and readers, especially if accounts or personal data may be affected. Record decisions and follow applicable obligations with expert guidance, then revise the playbook based on lessons learned.
