Make claims traceable to evidence
For each material assertion, record its source and supporting evidence: direct observation, interview, public record, dataset, or attributed statement. A claim repeated by several outlets is not necessarily independently verified.
Check names, titles, dates, locations, quantities, quotations, and links against original sources when practical. Note uncertainty, conflicting evidence, and what the newsroom could not establish. This makes review more useful than a simple checked box.
Use specialist review where the stakes require it
Claims involving health, law, finance, public safety, elections, or technical subjects may need a qualified reviewer and additional sourcing. Keep the reviewer’s role clear: they can assess a claim without controlling editorial independence.
Verify images and video separately. Confirm origin, date, location, edits, permissions, and context. A genuine image can still be misleading if it is old, miscaptioned, or presented as evidence of a different event.
Keep notes useful after publication
Store source notes and verification records securely with access limited to people who need them. Preserve links or copies where sources may change, and follow newsroom rules for confidential material.
After publication, monitor credible challenges and new evidence. Route them through the corrections process, update the story when warranted, and record the decision. A strong workflow supports speed because editors can see what is known and what remains uncertain.
