Design for real reader queries
Review common search terms, empty-result queries, misspellings, and reformulations. Readers may search for a person, place, topic, date, or exact phrase, so the interface should make the available options understandable.
Use a visible search field with an accessible label and helpful empty state. If no exact match exists, suggest related sections or spelling alternatives without implying that an unrelated story answers the query.
Make filters useful and predictable
Offer filters such as date, section, author, or content type only when the archive supports them reliably. Keep selected filters visible, provide a clear reset, and ensure keyboard and screen-reader users can operate the controls.
Sort results in a way that matches reader intent. For breaking or current topics, recency may help; for an archive search, relevance and date controls can both matter. Explain the ordering if it is not obvious.
Use search data to improve coverage
Track failed searches and refine synonyms, metadata, and archive indexing. Protect personal data and avoid retaining identifiable search histories longer than necessary.
Search logs can reveal unanswered reader questions and confusing navigation. Share aggregated patterns with editors and product teams, then measure whether improvements help readers find and continue reading relevant coverage.
