Turn a growing archive into useful topic journeys rather than thousands of thin, duplicated pages.

Create tags only when they serve a continuing topic
A useful tag represents a subject the newsroom expects to cover repeatedly and that readers may intentionally follow. One-article tags, spelling variants, duplicate people or organizations, and tags that reproduce category pages create clutter for editors, readers, and crawlers.
Make important topic pages genuinely useful
Strong topic pages can include a clear title, short editorial description, current coverage, evergreen explainers, related entities, and sensible pagination. Governance should define naming, merging, ownership, indexation, and retirement rules as the archive grows.
Link where the reader needs context
Internal links should connect new reporting to background, primary documents, profiles, timelines, and closely related updates. Descriptive anchor text and intentional article relationships are more valuable than automatically inserting the same keyword link into every story.
